Horror and horror-adjacent games are known for their puzzles. And seeing how it has some pretty big shoes to fill when it comes to horror game legacy, Alone in the Dark throws quite a few puzzles at its players. If you’d like to solve them while understanding the logic behind them, you’ve come to the right place.
General Puzzle Tips
While overall, Alone in the Dark offers a pretty good variety of puzzles, a few kinds of puzzle are encountered multiple times throughout the game. These include:

Talisman Puzzles
When dealing with the Talisman puzzles, you’ll be searching for 3-digit codes you will then need to enter on the three dials of your talisman. Whenever you find a code, you read it left to right, with the leftmost number going into the large outer dial, the middle number going into the medium middle dial, and the right number corresponding with the small inner dial. Use the arrows on the actual talisman as an indicator for the numbers.

Plate Puzzles
These involve moving and spinning plates, icons, pieces of some bigger picture in order to complete it. Usually you get at least some indication of what you’re working towards there. The Commonplace book you find early in the game has a quite few hints for these puzzles. Remembering the game’s representation of the Taurus constellation will also come in handy.

Safe Puzzles
The safes in the game all have 3-digit combinations, and the standard rule of safecracking applies – you spin the dial to the left to input the first number, then to the right for the second, and then back to the left for the third.
Zodiac Lock Puzzles
Several times throughout the game, instead of numeric codes, you’ll get zodiac signs. These correspond directly with numbers, and in case you need a hint, the Perosi’s Journal item you’ll get around the time you encounter your first zodiac code will show you which sign equates to which number.
