Microids and Pendulo Studios both have a rich history of developing adventure games, dating back to 1985 in the case of Microids. The games these studios have produces have been most popular in Europe, where these studios are based, Microids in France and Pendulo Studios in Spain. Now these two veteran developers are teaming up to make a new game, Blacksad: Under the Skin. The studios announced the project back in June of 2017 and this week they have released a teaser trailer.
If you are unfamiliar with the Blacksad comic series, it is a collection of gritty noir detective stories based in late 1950’s New York. They follow the adventures of John Blacksad, a hardboiled detective who grew up on the wrong side of town. Blacksad is a war veteran who doesn’t mind roughing people up to get to the bottom of a case. Oh and he is also a cat person, literally. All the “people” in this series are anthropomorphised animals. The French, Spanish cooperation is not new for the series, the comic is written and drawn by a Spanish author and illustrator but published by a French publisher first in France then in Spain.
The graphics in the trailer look good, keeping to the clean lined gritty aesthetic that the books are known for. However at this early stage all we have seen is pre-rendered cut scenes no actual gameplay.
Still with two veteran studios working together I have high hopes that Blacksad: Under the Skin will turn out to be a good game with an intriguing and compelling story. Unfortunately we will have to wait a while before we find out. The games only release date so far is 2019, when it will release on PC, Xbox, Playstation, Switch and Mac.
