Best Games of 2012

With the end of 2012 in sight, what better time is there to look back over the year and decide on my top games of 2012. Now when I say top games of 2012, they may not have been actually released in 2012 but they must have been near and I sure as hell played the bejeezus out of them during the year so they count.

I’m sure I’ve missed some, because quite frankly there were crap loads of games I could have played in 2012, and I couldn’t possibly play them all. So this is what we’ll do, I’ll list my top 5 games and then you can all use the comments bit below to add any you think should have been on the list. If nobody comments then I will just have to assume that the entire world agrees with me, and why the hell shouldn’t they.

Mists of Pandaria – First Thoughts

Mists Of Pandaria Logo add on world warcraft pandas expansion mopThe new World of Warcraft expansion Mists of Pandaria was released yesterday. Well Technically, due to differences in time zones it was released in the UK at 23:00 on Monday night. With a combination of both insomnia and pointlessly childish excitement I was up in the early hours of the morning eager to dive in and see all the new stuff.

Mists of Pandaria, to Buy or Not to Buy?

Mists Of Pandaria Logo add on world warcraft pandas expansionWorld of Warcraft expansions are always a cue for the gaming industry to get excited as the fans divide themselves down the middle. Half of the Warcraft fans herald the expansion as the saviour of the MMO while the other refuse to have anything to do with it because it changes something that they think is fundamental or because it includes pandas or something.

The latest World of Warcraft expansion called Mists of Pandaria is due for release on the 25th September this year.

Finding My Undiscovered Posts

flash fiction posts find lost hidden world of warcraft fable 3It’s amazing to thing that since this blog began in February there are some posts that have been relatively undiscovered. There are some bits of flash fiction that have only been read by one or two people. I don’t think they’re bad posts necessarily, maybe the SEO was off or maybe I just didn’t sitemap them properly, who knows?

So to showcase these undiscovered marvels of flash fiction and other posts, I’m going to re-introduce them here. Let’s see what we can do to push these posts a little more into the limelight.

Vengeance of the Void: Warcraft Nonsense

If you’re reading this it’s probably because you’ve heard tales that there’s info out there on the new World of Warcraft expansion called Vengeance of the Void.

Well, there is something out there but as normal I doubt it’s anything more than lies and fabrications …

I’ll let you familiarise yourself with the ‘supposed’ authentic letter first…

'Supposed' leaked letter regarding the newest expansion

Right, did you enjoy that? For me there were two areas that proves this to be nonsense.

Naga as a playable race?

One quite noticeable thing about all the playable races so far is that they all have legs. One of the most obvious parts about Naga is that they don’t. So when it comes to the character meshes and armour graphics, this is going to be a nightmare. Do you leave them out altogether, or create some weird kind of dress/mini-skirt thing for the Naga to wear?

Something else to consider, mounts? Apart from their own mount, are there any other races mounts they could even use? It does put them at a slight advantage in regards to the mount achievements.

Also, two new races would make twelve playable races in total? I think the opposite would be more true. I would expect them to include a new hero class and not even more races.

The Starting zones

The Alliance starting zone is DeadwindPass? So, what happens if you don’t buy the expansion? Can you not get to Deadwind Pass anymore? How do you get to Kharazan? Will that just get removed? All the new expansion races have zones specifically created for them outside of the existing content. That way it doesn’t mess around with the existing game.

“Lots of new story content for Shadow Priests”

Blizzard will not provide content for one spec of a class, and not other classes or specs. If they did there would be a huge shift of people creating that class and spec, throwing whatever type of balance there might be in which characters are created completely on a tilt.

Of course, I could be completely wrong. Maybe this is exactly what will happen. Although it seems very early to be getting this type of information. I also can’t comment on the lore, for all I know it might be completely waterproof, I was never much of a lore buff. I’m also curious to know what’s on the other 15 pages too.

Make up your own decisions. At the end of the day, no matter what any of us decide, we’ll know when they want us to…

Warcraft Real ID grouping? Why would you?

Warcraft Real ID grouping is the latest thing to come out of Blizzards think tank for ‘subscriber squeezing’. It is the ability for you to form groups with people on your Real-ID friends list. So, rather than using the LFG tool, and risking having to group with a pleb or two, for a small fee per month you can carefully select the right people from your Real-ID list.

The thing that puzzles me, is just how this is the game defining move that people are bigging it up (or breaking it down) to be. Read more

Professions in MMO’s – Some hit, but most miss.

Some people ignore them, some people dabble in them now and again, and there are others (like me) who treat crafting as an important and unmissable part of any MMO. Most MMO’s have a crafting system of some kind, yet some are dull, or even pointless.

Why can it be so difficult to get it right? What have the MMO games I’ve played the most done to fill that crafting gap and how effective is it?

World of Warcraft: Waving Goodbye

The time has come to cancel my subscription to World of Warcraft. I would like to say that “I do not make this decision lightly” but I was actually surprised at just how easy a decision it turned out to be.

My time spent in Azeroth has dwindled over the past few months. In fact my interest was waning half way through Wrath of the Lich King. Although I put this down to the general lull in enthusiasm that generally sets in just before a new add-on is released.

I even tried giving myself a blog-based boot up the jacksy with this post. Trying to desperately come up with good reasons why I wasn’t playing. Trying to find something that could re-ignite that spark that I’ve had almost consistently for 7 years or so. Read more
