Skyrim Mods, my favourites

Skyrim black sign title logo bethesdaThere could be many reasons why you like Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls V Skyrim, the beautiful graphics the in-depth stories, the non-linear gameplay, the near infinite ways that you can create and evolve your character, the list is long. Don’t get me wrong all those things are good, and you wouldn’t have a game without them, but to me the best bit about Skyrim, is that due to a very active modding community the world is constantly changing. If there’s something you don’t like about Skyrim and want to change it, then you can by way of the Skyrim Workshop.

Mods range from slight tweaks to the inclusion of new factions, quests, dungeons, even whole cities. As they say, the only limit is the imagination of the modding community. If you haven’t added any mods to your game of Skyrim yet then you really are missing out on some nice extra content.

I’ve gone through the list of mods that I use in my Skyrim, and picked out ten of them that I would never start a game without. Now, before we get to the list of mods, it is worth making it clear that this is in no way an exhaustive list. It couldn’t be further from one, there are now thousands upon thousands of mods in the workshop.

Best Games of 2012

With the end of 2012 in sight, what better time is there to look back over the year and decide on my top games of 2012. Now when I say top games of 2012, they may not have been actually released in 2012 but they must have been near and I sure as hell played the bejeezus out of them during the year so they count.

I’m sure I’ve missed some, because quite frankly there were crap loads of games I could have played in 2012, and I couldn’t possibly play them all. So this is what we’ll do, I’ll list my top 5 games and then you can all use the comments bit below to add any you think should have been on the list. If nobody comments then I will just have to assume that the entire world agrees with me, and why the hell shouldn’t they.

Battlemage, the Skyrim way

skyrim battle mage magic dual casting spells magickaI’ve started a new character on Skyrim. My khajjit thief-archer was a lot of fun to play but I needed to experience a more direct approach to the combat in Skyrim for my next character. Initially, I had trouble deciding on whether I should play an Orc warrior, clad in heavy armour or an uber-mage High elf. Then it hit me, why not do both (nearly)… a battlemage… I should make a battlemage.

Now for those not familiar with the term, a battlemage is a character that is effective in melee combat and magic, and even better they can wear heavy armour. Many other games don’t make this way of playing easy for you. You can be trapped in one of several set play styles, mage, archer, and warrior for example, but Skyrim’s levelling system allows you to mix and match the skills needed to create a battlemage. Elder Scrolls Online Announced

The Elder Scrolls Online Zenimax logo sign cover imageThere have been rumours of an Elder Scrolls MMO flying around for some time now. Rumours that have been met with equal amounts of cynicism and curiosity. Well, these rumours have now been confirmed. The Elder Scrolls Online is being developed by Zenimax Online Studios and is to be released in 2013 sometime, though I suspect this to be towards the end of 2013.

The Elder Scrolls Online is set a millennium before the events of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, a time when the evil Daedric Prince Molag Bal tries to suck all of Tamriel into some demonic world.

Flash Fiction: The Luck of Korneal

Flash Fiction attack lizard reptile myth legendLast Friday’s Flash Fiction Challenge from Terribleminds.com called ‘one small story in seven acts’ was to create a piece of Flash Fiction of no more than 1000 words that follows a basic seven act structure.

These acts are as follows, and I quote from Chuck himself here.

“Behold, a rough seven-act structure: Intro (duh) –> Problem or Attack (duh) –> Initial Struggle (character first tussles with source of conflict) –> Complications (conflict worsens, deepens, changes) –> Failed Attempts (oops, that didn’t work) –> Major Crisis (holy goatfucker shitbomb, everything’s gone pear-shaped) –> Climax and Resolution (duh).”

You can find out more here ‘25 Things You Should Know About Story Structure’

So with all that said here’s my entry called The Luck of Korneal. It’s based on my character in the video game Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim although the plot of the story was invented for this challenge.

Please leave a comment, they’re always welcome.

Skyrim, an Elder Scrolls V Review

On Friday 11th November,Bethesda released Elder Scrolls V and like I knew I would, I spent my entire weekend exploring Skyrim and seeing what the new world had to offer, and it’s a lot. I’ve been waiting for this game for many months now, maybe even years and I was keen to jump straight in and play it.

Oblivion, Elder Scrolls IV: Game Review

The Elder Scrolls series from Bethesda has been on my mind recently. This is partly due to the imminent release of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on the 11th November, coupled with the fact that I’ve been playing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on the xBox 360 while I wait for a working computer.

The game was released in early 2006 for the xBox 360 and PC. PS3 users had to wait a whole year before they could play it, although seeing as Oblivion won wheelbarrow-loads of awards for the ‘Best RPG Game of the Year’, ‘Best Game of the Year’ etc. I’m sure that most PS3 owners were just glad they got to play it at all.

5 years is a long time though. Since that time many more RPG’s have been released, games like Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age: 2, Mass Effect 2 to name the first handful that spring to mind. Has the game aged well? Does it still stand-up to the more modern RPG rivals? Read more
