There’s always time for an rpg dungeon crawler. Well, maybe not always. I mean if you’re in the middle of some middle-east trade negotiation then you’re unlikely to have the time for any game. Anyway, my point being that dungeon crawlers almost by definition are quick and really easy to pick up. The latest dungeon crawler to pass my way is called Dragons Dungeon: Awakening and is a 2d rpg experience that has been developed by LunarPixel.
So, what is Dragons Dungeon: Awakening?
Well, as you may have figured out by the opening paragraph, it’s a dungeon crawler. It’s been available on mobile devices for a while now, but LunarPixel have sorted out a few things and released it under the slightly new name of Dragons Dungeon: Awakening. Simple.
When you start a game, the first thing you have to do is choose your class from the array of standard rpg stereotypes (warrior, wizard, thief, paladin etc.) with fairly obvious traits. The warrior is armour-clad, and attacks with a sword, the mage has a fireball spell to attack from a distance etc.
Then with very little ado, you’re off on your adventures. There are a number of zones each with a number of levels. Each level is strewn with monsters and other bloodthirsty villains, and more importantly chests filled with gold, potions and other shiny treasure and equipment.
You wander around, killing monsters by clicking on them, and opening chests and gathering all the treasure. Easy? Well, no. Well not always, anyway. Firstly, as the developers have claimed, this game is very unforgiving. You get in too deep, or run out of potions and you’ll be hitting that death screen and having to start all over again. Some characters have an easier time than others. The armour-clad warrior is probably the easiest choice of class, where the squishy mage is for the real hardcore players and is heavily reliant on mana potions.
Want to rest and recover from the monster ass-kicking you’ve done? Need a place to sell your loot and buy more potions? Then head back to town. Meet the cast of shopkeepers and merchants and ready yourself for more dungeon-crawling hardcore rpg action.
