Science Fiction & Fantasy A-Z

science fiction space fantasyToday has not been one of the most action-packed days at work. In fact, the few minutes of work I had to do barely warranted me going in to work in the first place. Anyway, there’s only about two weeks left so I am trying to use this time in practical and sensible ways, doing things such as job search and preparing my CV, good solid and worthwhile stuff. Though useful it’s actually pretty boring so instead I thought I would see if I could write an A-Z using only Science Fictions and Fantasy programs that I’ve watched.

Murder at the Gallop, Classic!

Murder mystery agatha christie margaret rutherfordLast night I watched one of my favourite films, a classic Agatha Christie movie called ‘Murder at the Gallop’. Murder at the Gallop stars Margaret Rutherford as the tenacious Miss Marple as she uncovers the truth behind a reclusive millionaire who was apparently scared to death by a cat and his family who were all eager for their inheritance. Were any of them greedy enough to kill him?

It’s a classic movie that’s nearly fifty years old, being made in 1963. This is 17 years before I was even born, but it still entertains me despite the lack of bare boobs, explosions and laser-gun toting aliens. By today’s standards the characters were a little on the politically incorrect stereotype side and the special effects were…well not at all special. The obviously fake cat jumping out of the cupboard is my favourite, but none of that matters because it’s a watchable and entertaining murder mystery film. Read more

Best Buffy the Vampire Slayer Monsters

vampire slayer btvs sign symbol black white buffy In the 144 episodes of Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer there have been a large number of vampires, monsters, demons, witches, and things that generally prefer to go bump in the night than to get a decent night’s sleep. There were scary monsters, cool looking monsters, some were funny and some just creeped you the hell out. Nearly all of these were unique and brilliant in their own way, but if I had to write a list of my top Buffy the Vampire Slayer monsters, what would I include in them and more importantly why?

I didn’t want to choose one or two criteria as there are so many reasons you can like a Buffy monster. Instead I’m just going with the ones I find the most interesting or memorable.

You ready? Well strap yourself in. The list of my top Buffy the Vampire Slayer monsters begins with…

Angel: The Best Episodes

angel best episodes logo sign red symbolAfter writing the list of the best Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes it’s time to turn to writing the list of my favorite best Angel episodes. For those not versed in the Buffyverse, Angel was the spin-off show of Buffy the Vampire Slayer that saw Buffy’s forbidden love, the ensouled vampire ‘Angel’ heading off to Los Angeles to fight evil and ultimately seek his redemption. He is soon joined by Cordelia and Wesley, also from Buffy. Together they start Angel Investigations, a Supernatural detective agency that claims to ‘Help the Helpless’.

It’s worth noting that Angel is created from a darker and more adult stock than its parent show, Buffy. The lines between good and evil are much more blurred, demons aren’t always the bad guys.

So which are my favourite episodes?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Best Episodes

vampire slayer btvs sign symbol black whiteI’ve been starting to think about Buffy the Vampire Slayer recently. Buffy was written a long time before Twilight. So the vampires actually killed people and there was certainly none of this ‘romance between vampires and humans’ nonsense. Hmmmm ok well I guess there was that whole Buffy loving Angel thing which featured in most of the story-lines, but generally speaking vampires were there for one reason only, to feed and then eventually get staked and turn into dust. There certainly weren’t any werewolves… Oh, well not many.

Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, I used to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer religiously. The characters were brilliantly written, the plots were engaging, and the script was funny. Even now I find myself diving back in to watch all seven series once more.

“But what are your favourite episodes?” I hear you all cry. Well thank you for asking, here they are. My seven favourite episodes of Buffy… Read more
