Now that I’ve got to grips with the Cataclysm, it occurs to me that the World of Warcraft crafting is out of synch with the rest of the game. There was a time when crafting would take place as you leveled your character. As you progressed through the zones, you would gather the materials you needed and leveled up your professions of choice. This would happen almost accidentally.
Now with all the added xp boosts brought into the game, whether it’s heirloom weapons, guild rewards, dungeons giving you half a bar of xp, to name a few. You zoom through those first 30-40 levels, leaving your crafting profession behind. So, you’re left with one of two choices, ignore your crafting altogether and pick it up later in the game or even at the end of it, or drag yourself behind in lower zones grinding gathering materials.
It’s also very difficult not to get swept up in the new quest lines, especially at the early levels. If you get caught up in the Northern Barrens storyline at level 11, do a couple of instances and before you know it you’re level 20 and you haven’t got any of your professions past 50pts.
You nearly always find yourself in the situation where you are crafting items that are too lower level to be of any use to you at all. This is yet another reason that removes the point of crafting items. What’s the point of a healing potion for 80 HP when you have 1500-1800, or a pair of plate leggings that are worse than a pair of mail leggings at your level.
It all boils down to the crafting process which is ultimately pretty pointless until you get to top-level. There are a few exceptions, of course. Ignoring the crafting part and picking up two gathering skills will always net you a large stack of gold for very little effort. Engineering also has some fun little trinkets in there as well, but nothing that will really save your ass in the long-term.
I enjoy the crafting part of World of Warcraft, but the fun is slowly dribbling out. No-one likes wasting their time. Hopefully it is on their list of things to sort.
